Hello, Just wanna say as an American Muslim that I apologize to all who were offended by ICNA's wording. The event was not exclusive in the sense that they did not and would not turn away non-Muslims. I think ICNA just meant that Muslims were renting the park for the day... that since the park was closed to the public that day anyway and it was being rented by a Muslim organization in an effort to build the fledgling Muslim community here, that it was going to be full of probably 99% Muslims. Please do not take the word 'exclusively' too literally, there never was a plan to turn anyone away, I don't even know how they would know who to turn away.

Using the word "exclusive" was, in hindsight, a very bad choice. But I guarantee it wasn't meant to be taken that literally, like there was some type of segregationist agenda. On the contrary, we are all very welcoming of anyone who wants to learn about Islam. The thing is that so many of our large meetings that clearly invite non-Muslims spend the entire time focusing on educating non-Muslims about us (b/c doing so is badly needed right now) and working on interfaith relations that we hardly get to address the issues that we really need to address amongst ourselves.

Using the word 'exclusive' let us know that we would be free to pray the 5 daily prayers outside, that there would be halaal food served, that we wouldn't have to deal with weird stares because of our clothing, that we could focus on educating each other instead of spending the entire day explaining ourselves to others. In other words, it was a much needed break, just a release to relax and have fun.

So many Muslims are married to non-Muslims and come from non-Muslim families that I guarantee no one would have been turned away (and no one was). ICNA had a similar event before 9/11 and no one said anything then.

Also, ICNA does not sponsor terrorism. Imam Zaid Shaikr of the Zaytuna Institute would never attend if it did so, he is adamantly against the killing of innocent people anywhere, the other speakers and performers are similar. ICNA does educate about jihad in an attempt to show that what is going on now is NOT jihad, but political terrorism that is against Islam and humanity. The two are different. We need events like this so we can form a strong identity as Western Muslims, spread the true Islamic teachings of peace and patience and compassion for all humanity to our uneducated brothers and sisters, and combat terror.

Thank you,
peace
